USA Baby

This is my first ever blog post, Im a bit nervous how it goes but I suppose its not the first time I have ever written anything down, so I should be fine.

Im loving driving through California, its got everything, beautiful coastal scenes, amazing redwood forests, awesome beaches, small towns big cities and everthing in between. We started in San Francisco, went on a tandem ride over the Golden Gate Bridge (we didnt look like tourists I promise), then headed north tp Point Reyes which is on teh San Andreas fault. We are on the journey south now stopping at Cartmel, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbera and coming into LA for 4th July celebrations.

I know it is a cliche but I have been shocked at how Americans do everything so big.The GMC pick up trucksand other vehicles dwarf the size of Hummers and are everywhere. You mention impending Peak Oil to them and they thinkyour talking about an alternative salad dressing.

It’s their positivity and lack of cycnicism I love - I think I might be part American. Cashiers look you in the face and wish you a nice day without any sense of disingenousness. When I did the gig in San Francisco, there were some bloody awful acts on, the audience still gave them a massive whoop and round of applause at the end of their painful set, no one heckled, they just bore it until the tirade was over.

They love their history too - when we go into a new town the lady in tourist information will croon over the fact that there is abuilding over 100 years old. To us thats a new build!

I still find it amazing that we fly half way across the world and can speak directly with people, no language barriers. There is so much cross over with our own culture and much of this culture I feel I already knew because of what I had seen through Hollywood. As a culture that has a longer history I think there are things we can take from the American culture…has cycnicism creeped in with age, have we taken our history for granted….no I hear you cry inwardly critical glee, youre probably right.
